While the current government shutdown is both disruptive, with many commonplace federal services temporarily halted, and worrisome for hundreds of thousands of furloughed federal workers, the greater long-range significance may be that the Washington gridlock that brought us to this point could soon lead to something even worse: congressional refusal to allow an increase in the federal debt ceiling.
