Back in Mitchell’s office I asked him how he was feeling about the impending transmission of the series. It must be strange to know that within a few weeks millions of people would know who he and his staff and students are. Was he nervous or excited about the potential offers that could come his way from the media and elsewhere? ‘I honestly don’t know what to expect,’ Mitchell said. ‘I have spoken about it with Vic Goddard, who was the head of the school in Educating Essex. I asked his advice and he said, “Be normal, speak honestly and if people come knocking, go away and think about it first.” ’
