Thompson, 'Peter Pan' author J.M. Barrie and bank robber John Dillinger. But Depp's most famous biopic role was in 'Ed Wood,' where he played the notoriously bad horror film director/cross-dresser. Tim Burton's film covers the making of Wood's most famous bomb, 'Plan Nine From Outer Space.' Depp's earnestly tragic performance escaped the Academy's notice, but Martin Landau did win Best Supporting Actor for playing Bela Lugosi as a cantankerous old Hollywood veteran.
