He had been crossing the Andes by motorbike but his vehicle broke down, forcing him to continue on foot to the refuge, where he survived on rats he caught in a homemade trap and dried food from the hut. His survival was hailed as “a miracle” by José Luis Gioja, governor of the province of San Juan.
