In 1965, at the Royal Brompton, he started Europe’s first cystic fibrosis clinic for adults. It was only during this period that children suffering from the condition were beginning to survive into adulthood, and Batten’s clinic eventually became the world’s largest such centre for adult patients. He led the development of many new treatments and methods of care, and also trained registrars who would go on to run similar clinics in towns and cities across Britain.
