The Ryder Cup Europe hospitality suite, my base for the week, overlooks the 18th green – a ringside seat if ever there was one. What I am not prepared for is the sheer scale of the official entourage. For each of the 12 players representing Europe, there must be at least 20 supporters and hangers-on, from golfing grandees to celebrities from other sports (the footballer Alex McLeish, the cricketer Michael Atherton), from friends and relatives to sponsors. There is even a cardiologist from Birmingham who has operated on a grateful Ryder Cup bigwig.
