As well as eating the symbolic foods of the Seder plate, and reading from the Haggadah ritual book, they ruminated on the nature of being Jewish. “Is Jewish culture always expecting the worst?” asked Schama. “The Jewish imagination is paranoia, confirmed by history,” replied one of his guests, prompting wry laughter all round.
