They found that two had been made pregnant by senior officers; two male cadets had been raped; and there was a widespread atmosphere of intimidation. A female cadet said embarking on a ship was like being dropped in the middle of a game park. 'When we arrived,’ one said, 'we were told that the captain is our god. He can marry you, baptise you and even bury you without anybody’s permission. We were told that the sea is no-man’s land and that what happens at sea, stays at sea.’
